BiCOM Inc., a New York based company, in conjunction with NYC Department of Transportation (DOT), will be holding an Awareness and Screening Event at the Staten Island Ferry Terminal – over 100,000 people travel by this ferry daily. The event is scheduled to be covered by local TV, radio and print media.

United States Senator Charles Schumer has officially proclaimed March 12 as World Glaucoma Day in the State of New York.
After reminding some important facts on the threat to vision by glaucoma, the Proclamation states:

"The success of the World Glaucoma Association and the World Glaucoma Patient Association has grown and is measured by the strength and dedication of all its staff, leadership and supporters. […] I, Senator Charles E. Schumer, do recognize and observe with those gathered today that this day March 12, 2009 be proclaimed "World Glaucoma Day” in the State of New York".

BiCOM Inc. has a distinctive history of providing the community with free vision screenings and educational events. Tonometer Diaton is currently being used by Lions Clubs International has been noted on “The View” morning television show and coordinated mass health screenings along with the Staten Island Health Action group and other national and international organizations.

This annual Staten Island Ferry Event reaches many eyes yearly, along with bringing attention to the importance of routine Glaucoma Screenings. Glaucoma often goes undiagnosed, leading to its status of the Number One cause of preventable blindness in the United States.

Glaucoma is the leading cause of preventable blindness worldwide.

60 million Americans are at RISK for developing Glaucoma

Prevent Blindness America Survey found that:

  • Blindness ranked third (after cancer and heart disease) as people’s major fear.
  • It is estimated that over 4 million Americans have glaucoma but only half of those know they have it.
  • Glaucoma is 6 to 8 times more common in African-Americans than Caucasians.
  • Everyone is at risk for glaucoma from babies to senior citizens. Yes, older people are at a higher risk for glaucoma but babies can be born with glaucoma (approximately 1 out of every 10,000 babies born in the United States).

Often people experience loss of peripheral (side) vision first and compensate for this loss by turning their head. It is imperative to get regular Glaucoma check-ups, as there are medications and surgeries that can be used at the on-set of Glaucoma to stave off vision loss.

“Once you lose your vision, you will never regain it again – wouldn’t you rather catch it before the damage is done?” says Roman Iospa, CEO of BiCOM Inc.

BiCOM, with the introduction of its unique Diaton Tonometer that measures intra-ocular pressure through the eyelid without the use of anesthesia or eye drops, plans to continue free screenings and awareness events to organizations beyond the World Glaucoma Day.
